The journal was established in 1957 by the Ministry of Higher Education USSR, order of 31.07.1957 № 797. The issue of the journal was assigned to V.I. Ulyanov-Lenin Kazan State University awarded with the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. The first volume of the journal was issued in December 1957, from 1958 to 1966 the journal was issued with periodicity of 6 volumes yearly, from 1967 until now the journal is issued monthly in Russian language and is distributed in the Russian Federation and foreign countries.

In 1991, the USSR State Committee for Public Education, based on the document № 96-16-103 in.18 from 01.11.1991, passed the functions of the founder of the journal to V.I. Ulyanov-Lenin Kazan State University which provided the issue of the journal. Later on, in the registration certificate from 28.01.1999 № 018451 the founders of the journal were the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and V.I. Ulyanov-Lenin Kazan State University.

Since 2010, Kazan Federal University provides all the founder’s and publisher’s functions of the journal.

In 2009, an electronic version of the journal was established. The electronic versions of the journal are placed on the following websites:

- KFU (kpfu.ru);

- Russian Scientific Electronic Library (elibrary.ru);

- Branch of Mathematical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Mathnet.ru).

The journal is registered by the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications (ROSKOMNADZOR) twice:

- as a periodic printed journal «Izvestiya VUZ. Matematika» (the mass media registration certificate from 27.11.2020 PI № FS77-79690);

- as an electronic journal «Izvestiya VUZ. Matematika» (the mass media registration certificate from 23.03.2021 El № FS77-80712).

Since 1974, the journal is translated to English and is reissued in the USA by Allerton Press, based on the agreement with V.I. Ulyanov-Lenin Kazan State University awarded with the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. Since 1992, the title of the English version of the journal is Russian Mathematics (Izv. VUZ).

Since 1998, Allerton Press (in the end of 2005 this firm became part of Pleiades Publishing), according with the agreement, entrusted the work of translation to V.I. Ulyanov-Lenin Kazan State University.

Since 2007, English version of the journal is distributed by the corporation Springer.

Since 2010, Russian Mathematics (Izv. VUZ) is indexed in SCOPUS.

Since January 2016, articles in the English version of our journal «Russian Mathematics (Iz. VUZ)» are indexed in Web of Science.
